Cocked Die
April 17th, 2008 -- Categories: Table Games

Last game night, our group played one last game of Settlers of Catan before moving on to other games for a while. During our game of Settlers, one guy managed to get a cocked die on a flat surface. (For those not into games with dice, a “cocked die” is a die that isn’t sitting flat — usually because it rolled onto an obstacle like a book, the game board, or something. Dictionary.com - cocked.)

The corners of the Settlers game dice are rounded so they roll easier, and that’s a good thing. I never would have thought that feature could give this kind of result. The roll was so amazing to us that I took a picture to show it:

Now, I was going to talk more about the game, which was interesting, but after going to Dictionary.com for the link above, I found something much more interesting.

As cool as this odd die roll is, I found the definition of “cocked” (at the Dictionary.com link above) to be absolutely hilarious. Here, let me show you without having to go through the link:

1. To set erect; to turn up.
Our Lightfoot barks, and cocks his ears. –Gay.
Dick would cock his nose in scorn. –Swift.

2. To shape, as a hat, by turning up the brim.

3. To set on one side in a pert or jaunty manner.
They cocked their hats in each other’s faces. –Macaulay.

If reading that doesn’t give you a puerile grin, you’re too damn mature. It made me chuckle. But then, no one’s ever accused me of being too damn mature.
